TJANR Manuscript Guidelines

(Updated on 01/05/2023)

Authors submitting their manuscript to the  Texas Journal of Agriculture and Natural Resources (TJANR) should follow the manuscript guidelines as outlined. Three files are requested: manuscript submission, author affiliations document, and suggested reviewers list.

Author Affiliations:

Each proposal must be submitted with the author affiliation as a separate file titled “author affiliations”. It must contain:

  1. Author(s): 12 point, boldface, list authors in the order they are to appear if published, following the names with their affiliations.
  2. Author affiliation(s): 10 point, italics, include basic address (i.e., 1Department of Agriculture, Tarleton State University, Stephenville, TX 76402), use superscripts to indicate affiliations.
  3. The corresponding author should be clearly indicated and provide their complete name, title, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. The manuscript should be written and saved as a Microsoft Word document. The margins are 1” for all sides.
  1. Use font style Times New Roman throughout the manuscript. The font sizes should be as follows:
    1. Title: 14 point, boldface, capitalize main words
    2. Section headings: 12 point, boldface, centered, all capital letters, one blank line above and below headings
    3. Secondary headings: 10 point, boldface, period after heading, text continues on the same line
    4. Abstract text: 10 point, boldface
    5. Main text: 10 point
    6. All text in the abstract and in the body of the manuscript should be justified.
    7. The manuscript should be broken into the following sections: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION, and REFERENCES.

Abstract:

  1. The Abstract paragraph should be one paragraph, 10-point boldface font.
  2. It should summarize the procedures and results in 200 words or less.
  3. Do not cite references in the Abstract paragraph.
  4. The Abstract paragraph should be followed by key words for indexing. Key words should be singular, lowercase letters that are not boldfaced, and separated by commas (i.e., KEY WORDS: dairy cow, silage).

Tables:

  1. Tables must be created using either Excel or the table feature in Microsoft Word. Tables should not be created using tabs and the space bar to create the alignment of columns.
  2. Insert tables at the end of the document clearly labeled with a table number and title. Within the text, indicate where the table should go with text: (TABLE 1 ABOUT HERE).
  3. Text should not be in boldface. Do not use shading in tables and dividing lines/axes should be single lines. Do not outline the table with an outside border. Use ¼ point for the line width.
  4. Tables are referred to as “Table 3” or (Table 3) and should be numbered consecutively according to their placement in the text. Punctuate after the table number and after the table’s title.
  5. Tables must fit the margins of the journal as given above.
  6. Table notes should be single-spaced and located below the table in 9-point Times New Roman font.

Figures (photographs, graphs, charts, and diagrams):

  1. Nothing should be in boldface and each axis should have description and unit.
  2. Figures are referred to as “Figure 3” or (Fig. 3) and should be numbered consecutively according to their placement in the text. Punctuate after the figure number and after the figure’s title.
  3. Use ¼ point line width for your axis lines.
  4. Figures must fit the margins of the journal as given above.
  5. Figure notes should be single-spaced. Any extra information should be located below the figure in 9-point Times New Roman font.

Abbreviations, Symbols, and More:

  1. Write out numbers one through nine except when they are units of measure. Do not write out numbers 10 and above unless it is the first word of a sentence.
  2. Abbreviate the names of states, provinces, and territories when following a city name. Otherwise, spell the place name out in full.
  3. When writing out scientific names, use italics. Once the scientific name has been fully written out for the first reference, the generic name may be abbreviated to the single first upper-case letter
(i.e., Escherichia coli would be E. coli in subsequent uses in the manuscript).
  4. Use a comma before the final item when there is a list of three or more items (i.e., The study included data from January, March, and May).
  5. Either the English or Metric system may be used for weights and other measurements but the same system must be used throughout the manuscript.
  6. Avoid the use of first-person pronouns.
  7. Use hyphens when it’s a compound adjective that includes a number (i.e., 9-year-old ewe; 16-year-old wine).
  8. For parentheses within parentheses, substitute brackets for the inner pair of parentheses.
  9. Maintain continuity throughout the manuscript with the units of measure.

References:

  1. All references in the text should appear in the References section and vice versa.
  2. All web addresses need to in the References section rather than placed in the text. Please use in-text citation CSE style for the in-text reference rather than pasting in the entire web address.
    1. USDA-NASS. 2019. Agricultural census: 2017. Available at http://www.nass.usda.gov/census
    2. To cite the above in text, it would look like: (USDA-NASS 2019) or USDA-NASS (2019) rather than putting the whole web address in your text.
    3. All references should be listed in alphabetical order. Please refer to the Council of Science Editors Style Manual for their name-year version of documentation.
